The Positive Effect of Occupational Therapy Program on Interpersonal Skills and Quality of Life of Patients with Schizophrenia : Case Study

Abstract
Objective : The purposes of this research are to identify the effects of social skill training program which is a type of occupational therapy program and vocational rehabilitation program on a patient with schizophrenia and see how both programs improve the patient¡¯s interpersonal skills and the quality of living.

Methods : The case study was conducted with a 41-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in a national hospital of G province. Both COPM and BPRS were used in order to measure the level of change of interpersonal skills and the quality of life after participating social skill training program and vocational rehabilitation program that the patient chose.

Results : After participating social skill training program, occupational rehabilitation program and web surfing program as a means of looking for a job, the patient¡¯s level of performance improved to 6.5 from 3 and the degree of satisfaction improved to 6.5 from 3 in the COPM. In terms of the BPRS, the level of depression, guilt, and expansiveness decreased to 1 from 3 respectively. Also, the level of elation, excitement, and distractedness decreased to 2 from 3.

Conclusions : Both occupational therapy program and vocational rehabilitation program have positive effects on patients¡¯ interpersonal skills and quality of life. There should be more studies for patients with schizophrenia to live a productive life after discharge.
